PUUF was quite involved in Pocatello’s celebration of the first Federal Holiday of Juneteenth. Volunteers helped with food preparations and donations, ticket-taking and cleaning up. Many of our members attended the event. They enjoyed a variety of barbequed meats, potato salad, coleslaw, rolls, baked desserts and refreshing watermelon. We even had 2 raffle winners, Mary Gerhke who bid on a basket that included a $50 gift card for a meal and Jeff Shelton who won a 50 pound box of Idaho Potatoes.
Many of PUUF members are also members of the Pocatello Chapter of NAACP who put on this event and created the programming that involved rousing music, and the silent auction. The awarding of 2 major scholarships to a local high school student to attend ISU, and an ISU student to attend special graduate studies were part of the program. The event was held in the park at the Senior Services Center in Pocatello…a light breeze and shade under many old trees added to the celebratory atmosphere enjoyed by many of our PUUF members and friends.
